Four petitions have so far been filed before the Supreme Court challenging the new bill presented by the government, which aims to abolish the pension rights of Members of Parliament.

Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne, making a special statement in Parliament today (22) regarding this matter, stated that he has received a copy of another petition filed before the Supreme Court in accordance with Article 121(1) of the Constitution.

The Minister of Justice and National Integration, Dr. Harshana Nanayakkara, presented this bill to Parliament on the 7th, and a period of 14 days from that date was given for any party wishing to challenge it in court.

The second reading debate of the proposed bill is scheduled to be held late next month, and if this bill is passed in Parliament, the pension rights of 512 former Members of Parliament will be abolished.
