
Police Narcotics Bureau officials have successfully arrested a foreigner at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake for illegally bringing a consignment of gold chains worth nearly three crore rupees (approximately Rs. 30 million) into the island.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the arrested suspect is a 25-year-old Indian national, who works as a hotel employee in India. He arrived at Katunayake Airport yesterday (30) around 2:30 AM on a SriLankan Airlines flight from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Airport Police Narcotics Bureau officials, suspecting this passenger who was attempting to leave the airport, subjected him to a search. During the search, officers discovered 5 gold chains weighing 750 grams, cleverly concealed inside the suspect's jacket.
Further investigations into the incident are currently being carried out by the Katunayake Airport Police Narcotics Bureau.
