Cardinal to Send Legal Letter to Wimal Weerawansa Over False Claims



The Archdiocese of Colombo will send a letter of demand to National Freedom Front Leader Wimal Weerawansa over remarks he made about Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith. Weerawansa had implied during a TV interview that the Cardinal's absence from the 2019 Easter Sunday service in Kochchikade may have been due to a "divine warning" and suggested possible prior knowledge of the attacks.

Fr. Cyril Gamini, Media Spokesperson for the Archdiocese, refuted the claims as false and misleading. He explained that the Cardinal traditionally conducts a midnight Easter Mass, not a morning service, and in 2019, he led the midnight Mass at St. Lucia’s Cathedral, as per custom.

The Archdiocese is seeking a public correction from Weerawansa and confirmed legal action is being taken to protect the Cardinal’s reputatio
