China to Launch Online Visa Application System in Sri Lanka from June 30

New digital process aims to streamline applications for travel to mainland China

Digital Process Begins June 30

The Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka will officially launch its China Visa Online Application System on June 30, 2025, the embassy spokesman announced. The initiative marks a significant shift toward digitalization in consular services.

Step-by-Step Guide to the Application Process

Applicants must visit https://consular.mfa.gov.cn/VISA/ to:

Fill out the visa application form online

Upload the required documents

Once submitted, the application enters a preliminary review phase, which takes approximately 1 to 3 working days.

When to Submit Your Passport

After the application status changes to “Passport to be submitted”, the applicant must:

Visit the embassy in person

Submit their original passport

Provide any other required documents

Provide biometric information

A second review process follows and typically takes 3 to 4 working days.

Payment and Visa Collection
If the visa is approved, applicants will be instructed to return to the embassy to:

Collect their passport and visa

Pay the applicable visa fees

This will complete the application process.

Important Timing Guidelines

The embassy advises applicants not to submit applications more than one month in advance.
Applying too early may cause delays in processing.
Instead, it is recommended to apply two to three weeks before the intended travel date.

Mainland Visas Only

This system applies exclusively to visas for mainland China.
Applications for Hong Kong and Macao must still be submitted via the traditional method at the Chinese Embassy.

A Step Toward Efficient Diplomacy
According to the Chinese Embassy, this digital upgrade is expected to:

Reduce in-person congestion

Improve processing times

Enhance bilateral cooperation through improved administrative efficiency

The new system is part of a broader push by China to modernize its global consular services.
