Popular film and teledrama actress Semini Iddamalgoda was arrested yesterday (10) by the Welikada Police, according to reports. Police sources state that although she came to the station in connection with a traffic accident, she was taken into custody based on a separate legal matter.
According to police sources, Ms. Iddamalgoda operates a private security company, and several court cases are ongoing concerning the non-payment of salaries to employees of that company. It has been confirmed that multiple arrest warrants had been issued against her in relation to those cases.
A senior police officer revealed that although these warrants had been outstanding for some time, certain police officers had failed to act on them, effectively concealing them. Due to this situation, the Nugegoda Magistrate's Court had even issued a show-cause notice to the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Nugegoda Police Division.
Following a change in leadership at the Welikada Police Station, the new OIC took steps to enforce the court-issued warrants against Ms. Iddamalgoda. Accordingly, when she came to the police station yesterday regarding the traffic incident, she was arrested. Reports indicate that she is to be presented before the court following the arrest.
Previously, on December 16, 2021, Ms. Semini Iddamalgoda appeared before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court in a case related to operating a security service without a valid license.
That earlier case, filed by the Grandpass Police, also resulted in the court issuing a warrant when she failed to appear during a prior hearing. When she eventually appeared, the court revoked the warrant and she admitted to operating the service without proper licensing.
Acting Magistrate P.D. Perera then fined her Rs. 15,000, allowing her to be released. However, she has since been required to appear before the court again, this time regarding employee-related issues at her security service business.
