A shocking car theft occurred in broad daylight on Friday, just 200 metres from the Mount Lavinia Police Station, when an 81-year-old man briefly left his vehicle to visit a nearby bank, unknowingly leaving his 76-year-old wife in danger.
According to Mount Lavinia Police, the suspect was caught on CCTV circling the parked car before suddenly jumping in and speeding away — with the elderly woman still seated inside.
The suspect reportedly told the woman not to jump, but fearing for her life, she leapt from the moving vehicle. Fortunately, she escaped with minor injuries.
An eyewitness, Chamath Perera, who was walking past the scene at the time, said the incident happened in a flash.
“I saw this man walking around the car like he was looking for something. Suddenly, he got in and just drove off. A few seconds later, I heard a scream — the woman had jumped out. It was terrifying to watch,” Perera said “She was clearly shaken, and people rushed to help her.”
Police have since launched a full investigation, using CCTV footage from the area. The stolen car was later traced heading toward Colombo.
In a disturbing twist, authorities also confirmed that the same vehicle was used later that day in a separate crime — a gold chain snatching in Dehiwala.
The Mount Lavinia Police are urging anyone with information about the suspect or vehicle to come forward as investigations continue.
