Basil to be new Finance Minister on June 6 - Reduces petrol prices Basil Rajapaksa, the founder of the Sri Lanka People's Front, who returned to the United States on a private visit today, will be sworn in as a Member of Parliament on Tuesday, July 6, and will be sworn in as the Cabinet Minister of 'Economic Development' later that afternoon. Reports. According to political sources, Basil's dual citizenship was removed from the 20th Amendment. 

He will be given a seat in Parliament after the resignation of Prof. Ranjith Bandara, who is currently a National List Member of Parliament. Basil was also the Minister of Economic Development during the period 2010-2015, and many people still talk differently about how he handled several projects with many powers during that period. This time Basil Rajapaksa will again be appointed as the Cabinet Minister of Economic Development and the post of Finance Minister under his brother Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.

It is reported that Mr Rajapaksa will reduce the petrol price by Rs. 5 to Rs. 7 and the price of diesel by Rs. Meanwhile, political parties have said that the recent increase in petrol prices was aimed at building confidence in the ministerial post and spreading rumours that 'Basil can reduce it'. Meanwhile, political sources say that Basil Rajapaksa has been unofficially nominated as the next presidential candidate.
