Dimuth named captain of world cup squad ... instead of Malinga

Sri Lanka Cricket Association decided today (17) to hand over the responsibility of directing the Sri Lankan team at the 2019 word cup cricket tournament scheduled to commence next month. This appointment has been launched by the selecting committee headed by chief selector Mr. Asantha de Mel under approval of of the minister, Mr. Shammi Silva, cricket chairman told media that he was informed by the cricket administration committee.

It is expected that the squad comprising 15 players for the world cup cricket tournament commencing
on 30th May in England is to be named tomorrow (18). Various  rumours floated to the effect that the oldest player Lasith Malinga in the team would be chosen to lead the team and he too had been keeping his fingers crossed over the appointment. It was with that hope that he arrived in Sri Lanka to join the inter-provincial cricket tournament launched to select the Sri Lanka cricket team recently for the world cup cricket tournament even while he was taking part in the IPL being played in India. In the meantime he has stated at certain discussions that he is hoping to direct the world cup tournament to be played. He has further mentioned that after such appointment he would be bidding goodbye to cricket ... he has thus released a statement in that connection last March. In the process he has also from time to time made comments in a wavering manner that he too wishes to take a decision of remaining in the team on the understanding that he will be appointed captain of the world cup. What some people inferred in this connection was that if he is not appointed captain, he would resign from the team. Whatever it is, Malinga has not so far made any comments about Dimuth Karunaratna being made captain of the world cup squad.
