Grace period to register vehicles ... extended
Several months more to implement fines according to new system
Though the grace period given to vehicle owners with open papers to register their vehicles was to end today November 30th, as a large number are still rocking to the Narahenpita Motor Traffic Department in this connection, the Commissioner General of Motor Traffic Mr.A.H.K. Jagath Chandrasiri states that approval of the cabinet has been secured to extend the said period till 30th December. This change has been effected after considering
the difficulties faced both by the public as well as the staff as a result of curbing the congestion that has resulted with a large number of people streaming in to get the vehicles registered as a consequence of the proposal of the 2017 budget to increase fines for traffic violations.
It is further reported that there will be a delay of several months for the revised scheme of fines proposed to be effected as it has to be approved both by the Attorney General as well as the parliament through the cabinet.
