Attempt to smuggle the world's largest blue gem
Asanga Welagedera the chairman of gem and jewellery authority had quipped that there an attempt to smuggle the world's largest blue gem out of the country.
In this connection the custom officers at the Bandaranaike International airport have been alerted.This
blue gem is the largest gem in the world and is very rare.The name of the owner has not been disclosed and is kept confidential. The chairman of the gem and jewellery authority had said that there have been previous instances when such large gems have been smuggled out of the country on the sly.
This situation had been a problem to the economy of the country and to the gem and jewellery field in the country was what was said by Asanga Welagedera.This particular blue gem had been obtained from the mining field in Ratnapura had been named as "Lanham star of Adam" or "Sri lankawe adamge tharuwa".This blue gem has been termed a very rare gem by government sources.This rare blue gem is 1404.49 carrots and in grams 281 and it is worth over rupees billion 4200.
