Husband throws child down mountain ....

to keep paramour in house!

A 28 year old father of one child from Ratmalana who tried to throw his 4 year old boy down a hill and kill him was taken into custody by the police yesterday.

A person who came close to Katugashinna Ella in Hanguranketha had gone to a lofty position in the place and had tried to push the child which incident was seen by a woman in a neighbouring house and she had made a complaint to the police after which the child had been rescued. Fortunately as the child had fallen to a place which was not too deep, the police say that the child had not suffered any injury as such.

On taking the 28 year old father into police custody and questioned he had mentioned that his wife was employed overseas and that he was maintaining an illicit love affair with a woman in the same place where he was working in Mount Lavinia area. He further had said that another confidante of their workplace was resident in Mul Oya area and after he had gone to spend a holiday at her home had subsequently gone to visit the Katugashinna Ella in Hanguranketha on the way. However, what he says is that he had gone near the said waterfall only to have a look at it and not with the motive of doing any harm to the child. As such the child's father had told the police that he did not push the child but that the latter lost his footing after climbing on to a rock. At the time the 4 year old boy was in a state of confusion and fear when the police rescued him.

But what the woman who saw the scene said was that a woman and a man who came close to the waterfall with a child had after a short while she had noticed the child being pushed down from near the waterfall. Also that when she was engaged in a telephone conversation she had noticed the man and woman proceeding towards the waterfall and the child who climbed the rock after a short while had been pushed down by the father. The woman further said that after pushing the child they had tried to beat a retreat and that they had come to this spot in a three-wheeler which had no numberplates.

The police are making inquiries to find out whether this action was taken to kill the child because the latter was a hindrance for the man to marrying the suspect-woman with whom he had developed this lliason. It was expected to produce the child's father, the woman and the child concerned to Walapane District Courts.
