People in a queue at Gangarama in Colombo ....

to buy lunch a packet for Rs. 50!

Just imagine the number of people who are lamenting having to pay one hundred or two
hundred rupees for a daily lunch packet in which case they are unable to make ends meet for the month. If they are able to get a parcel of lunch for Rs. 50, it would certainly be a wonderful opportunity. The Ministry of Food Protection has from this week commenced a programme of giving a low-cost lunch packet from Gangarama Vihara, Colombo. As a primary step, issuing 15000 food parcels have begun to be issued per day in the City of Colombo. On the inaugural instance of launching this programme, Minister Gamini Jayawickrema Perera too attended the occasion and as a token of happiness shared for launching the programme yesterday, all such food was given free of charge yesterday. In this manner, the organisers say that the manufacturer is able to secure a profit of Rs. 8 per lunch packet by disposing it for Rs. 50.

Seen in the photograph below is how Viharadhipathi of Gangarama, Rev. Galaboda Gnanissara Thero partakes his lunch on the occasion when the crowds were streaming in to the dansela.
