Wariyapola Facebook video incident -- Updates 5

Why was girl taken into custody now? -- Hirunika Both are at fault -- Ranjan
Wariyapola Addl. Magistrate Mrs. Shrimathi Rajapaksha last evening ordered that the girl Thilini Amalka who was taken into custody yesterday in relation to the incident of a case of assault in Wariyapola be released on personal bond.
Thilini Amalka who is employed in a factory in
Ratmalana came to Wariyapola Police accompanied with a lawyer on which occasion she was taken into custody. After an interrogation which lasted for a period close upon 2 hours she had been directed to a JMO to inquire into her mental condition. By afternoon it was confirmed according to the medical report that the girl has no mental disturbance. It was after that that the girl was granted bail after she was produced before Wariyapola Magistrates Court.

What Western Province Provincial Council member cum Attorney-at-Law Hirunika Premachandra who expressed her comments on the girl being taken into custody said was that it is humourous that action by the police was so much delayed. She expressed her opinion in this connection to the Daily Mirror newspaper thus: "I also have faced such circumstances. But I believe that a lady should have patience. Assaulting him more than once is absolutely too much. But I don't say a woman should bear up all this. We should abhor street harassment.

The point that the issue where this youth's hearing has been delayed so far as 2 weeks is suspicious. It may have been done on somebody's advice. In the same way it is humourous that the police have taken a person into custody so late when such an assault has taken place. That could have been done during the course of the week when the incident took place. They had thought of doing something like that only when a sensation has spread round the country".

Parliamentarian and film actor Ranjan Ramanayaka said that he does not approve of the girl assaulting for about a period of half hour. This is how he spoke about it: "As I didn't see this with my own eyes, it is difficult to give a clear idea. But according to news received from the video and information that was circulated, both have faults on their part. The police and the lawyers have to give a decision on this after considering the facts.

It's okay that one blow is dealt because something was said in fun to provoke someone. If necessary she could have gone to police. It is wrong for anybody to take the law into his or her own hands".
