A 42 year old woman was taken into custody by Kadawatha police on December 13th for having given a promise of marriage to an army soldier and had taken lakhs of money, gifts and various other things from him by acting as a young girl.
It was reported that the suspect who had struck up a romance by using a photo of a young girl of 28 years who incidentally was a relation of hers. The romance had been going on across the phone. Saying that the photo was hers, the suspect had posted it to the army soldier when the photo actually was that of a young girl who really was her relation. The attractive girl who was a relation of the woman had not been aware of any of these happenings. The suspect had for many months been hoodwinking the soldier, extracting money, valuable dresses, presents and various other things. The woman had even got the army soldier to reload her phone.
It was on December 12th that the soldier had come in search of the 'girl' together with his relatives to Kadawatha. The soldier had shown the girl's photo to the neighbourhood in the area in order to find the necessary information to arrive at her home and finally had gone there.
Only after going to the house did he come to realise that the girl whom he so far loved was someone who was already married and was having 2 children and did not live there at all. The attractive young girl in the house was unaware of the cheating that had been going on for quite sometime by the suspect and had become upset and confused by this story.
Subsequently the soldier had complained to OIC Mr. A. Wickramasingha of Kadawatha police. The police who conducted investigations on this matter had proceeded to arrest the suspected woman who had duped the army soldier. It was only later that it was revealed that the suspect had been posing off as the aunt of the relative girl and had made it a habit of meeting the soldier on a number of occasions and extracted money from him. She had cheated the army soldier by saying that the girl on the photo was a relative of hers. The woman had thus taken the soldier for a ride by acting as the 28 year old girl and had thus made this connection.
The suspect is expected to be produced before courts. The OIC of Kadawatha police and other police officers are conducting inquiries under instructions of ASP of police, Mr. Jagath Weerakoon.
