Maithri contests from Polonnaruwa at general election -- says "I will be born again"

Minister Dayasiri Jayasekera standing in front of former president announced at a festival held yesterday (3) at Polonnaruwa that former president Maithripala Sirisena would be coming forward to contest the general election from Polonnaruwa and to elect him with a majority of preferential votes and send him to parliament.

Former president Maithri who addressed the occasion said that 'he wishes to serve the country and
that he would be born again politically'. In this manner this is the second occasion that a former president is trying to make his way into the parliament. Prior to this, after being defeated in the presidential elections in 2014, Mahinda Rajapaksa came forward for the general election in 2015 from Kurunegala and managed to become a member of parliament.

Whatever it is, though Mahinda contested the general election of 2015 pinning hopes of obtaining the position of prime minister, he also had in mind his want of retaining his political journey on the journey towards country's leadership. He of course also had a large strength by way of crowds. However, former president Maithripala does not seem to have such an ambition. He keeps moving to a lesser place where he is. Other than a few MPs of SLFP by now he has no power of a large group as such either. According to the pledge made at the SLFP and SLPF, an opportunity of a ministerial post ministerial post is due to Maithripala Sirisena in the cabinet.
