Inclement results in 5 deaths so far

4126 persons have been subjected to the influence of harsh weather conditions prevailing in 10 districts in the island. Due to such conditions 5 people have died, disaster management centre says. 

Because of the torrential rain falling on Bibile area, Urumithenna mountain has experienced a
landslide. 4 houses have been damaged and members of 20 families have been given refuge in Medapitiya Nilagiri vihara. 4 spill gates of Thabbowa reservoir have been opened and an alert has been issued to people in Thabbowa, Thenuwara and Mailankulama. 

A discussion was held about the disaster situation being experienced in Nuwara Eliya district headed by minister Arumugam Thondaman. Several matters of interest including avenues of providing relief to people who have become victims in this respect were discussed. 

Three persons have met with death as a consequence of an eartslide cascading on to a house in Malapattawa, Padiyapelella, Nuwara Eliya. Our correspondents reported that there were 4 persons inside the said house at the time the tragedy occured. Two dead bodies were recovered this morning while another dead body was recovered this afternoon. Our correspondents say that a 15 year old girl who was in the house is still missing. Operation activities at this location have been stopped because of prevailing bad weather. Personnel attached to central security headquarters, third singha regiment and the rifle battalion assisted in operations.
