6 wicket Test win for Sri Lanka ... by beating New Zealand

Sri Lanka was successful enough to clinch victory in the Test match played between Sri Lanka and touring New Zealand. The Sri Lanka team which pursued a target of 268 runs yesterday (17) was 133 unbeaten at close of play and finally was able to achieve their target after losing 4 wickets. The 122 acquired by by Dimuth Karunaratna and Lahiru Thirimanna's 64 runs actually colored the innings.

In the match played at Galle international playground, New Zealand who took first lease at the wicket
totalled 249 runs all out. The Sri Lanka team replied by scoring 267 all out. After New Zealand were all out in their second innings for 285 they had to launch a battle against Sri Lanka with shadows of defeat lurking on the horizon. Thus, to clinch victory in their second innings Sri Lanka was faced with a target of 268 runs; however, since the highest number of runs acquired in the fourth innings and won a match in  Galle esplanade happens to be 99 runs; this target was somewhat risky.

With this victory Sri Lanka managed to enter the record books by recording a new record of creating a partnership of 161 runs for the first wicket in the last innings. Accompanying this victory, Sri Lanka has acquired 60 bonus points for the forthcoming world cup Test series.
