100 lakhs pinched from super market in Union Place through password fraud

Slave Island police say that a female cashier is alleged to have indulged in a fraud of over Rs. hundred and twenty lakhs from the cash counter by utilising the password of the manager of the cash counter on the sly of a super market situated in Union Place, Colombo. A sum of Rs. 41,000 in the cash machine being hidden inside the suspect's shoe has been recorded in the CCTV cameras and as a result the suspect was taken into custody and the said cash recovered.

Police say that if any irregularity occurs in the dispensing cash machine, the manager in charge of the
counter is to come there and after entering the password the machine is brought back to its former state and during that procedure the bill denoted in the cash machine becomes inactive. Police further say that on an occasion when the suspect's cash machine became inactive, she has retained in her memory the password employed by the manager and subsequently committed this offence. It has been revealed that when tourists visit this super market they make purchases of goods between Rs. 50,000 or Rs. one lakh and after a payment of Rs. lakhs are made, the suspect used to employ that said password and renders the bill 'dead' and thus hides all cash in that bill, it has been revealed. The suspect has engaged in this fraud for a number of months and it has been observed that over Rs. hundred and twenty lakhs have gone missing as revealed by audit reports, police mention.

On the occasion when police took steps to arrest the suspect, it was found that Rs. 38 lakhs in her account was found diverted to her mother's account, police say. This young girl of 28 years who is a resident of Godakawela area had started working at the supper market from 2 years before, it is learned. The suspect has been produced before court and sent to remand prison.
