Teacher - Principal sick leave ...
Activities of national schools collapse

As a consequence of the strike launched today (13) by thirty unions getting together for the first time in history to settle the teacher - principal issue, activities of several schools islandwide have become disrupted this morning, it is reported. As all teacher - principals in the island have reported sick leave today (13), it was reported that an abandoned atmosphere was observed with only schoolchildren remaining isolated.

The reason for the strike is to rectify salary anomalies, settle issues resulting in promotions, stopping
monies collected from parents for maintenance of school and to organise a system whereby teachers who safeguard discipline of students are given protection.

It was in a most inhuman manner that teachers and principals who protested by going before the Education Ministry recently to air their views on this matter were chased away from there with a barrage of water canons being targeted at them. Protests are expected to be launched today regarding these issues at 20 locations including close to Nugegoda flyover.

What Mr. Mahinda Jayasingha, chief secretary of Ceylon Teachers' Union said was that all discussions held with authorities concerned to solve existing issues were in vain and as a result they had to resort to a strike. Mr. Joseph Stalin, secretary of Ceylon Teachers' Union said that government should take responsibility of difficulties encountered by children today and that if no proper response is received for this issue at hand, a continuous procedure would be launched in this connection in future.
