Surgeon who attacks nurse with bone-cutter -- compensates by paying one lakh!

During an operation which was being performed in a surgical theatre at Kurunegala General Hospital, the consultant surgeon there has attacked the nurse who had been assisting in the operation with a 'bone-cutter' and as a result she has been admitted for treatment in the same hospital for treatment due to an injury to her head from the said attack. Later on the nursing staff had protested yesterday against the incident concerned while the surgeon was taken into police custody. On that occasion he has accepted guilty to the offence and had
agreed to compensate the nurse with a payment of Rs. one lakh and thus the issue was resolved.

It is nurse Madhavi Rajaguru who has been injured by the surgeon's blow which has taken place day before yesterday (12) evening and an operation was performed because of the injury to her head, hospital sources say.

This blow was dealt when during the course of an operation after the surgeon has used this tool called bone-cutter has left it on the bed of the patient and has instructed the said nurse to remove it from there when on the contrary she has instead placed it on the tray which was in her hands. The nurse who was injured has said that the surgeon who has lost his temper had dealt a blow on her head with the same instrument. As blood had begun to pour from the head, she has immediately sought treatment at the same hospital.

The nursing staff of Kurunegala General Hospital has yesterday kept away from duties last morning by protesting against this incident while the director of Kurunegala General Hospital, Dr. Weerabandara said that an inquiry has been commenced about the incident concerned and that he assumes that the said surgeon could be suffering from some mental problem.

Whatever it is, after the surgeon was taken into custody, the surgeon has inquired whether it is possible to settle the issue before being produced before the magistrate and that he is willing to compensate the victim by paying her a sum of Rs. one lakh. The nurse in this instance has consented to it; thus bringing the matter to a settlement. The nurse concerned is still under treatment.
