Tamil underground clash in Wattala ...
ends with two deaths

There had been a case of shooting last evening (13) near Aiyan Sabrimale Kovil at Hekittha, Wattala where two unidentified gunmen had fired at two unknown persons who were travelling in a motor vehicle and a person supposed to be connected to the underworld and his assistant have embraced death, Wattala police say. It has been found that shots fired was from a T 56 weapon. A lady and her two daughters aged 8 years and about
one and a half year old who were in the back seat of the vehicle which came under firing had managed to save their lives.

It is 31 year old Steven Ramanathan Raj temporarily residing at Hunupitiya, Wattala and another person named Madi aged 37 who were the two victims. The person called Rajendran who was shot dead had been coming home after visiting a kovil in Colombo area when he was subjected to this tragedy.

A group who had come in a motor car has at about 3.30 last evening had blocked the road preventing Rajendran from driving further and two persons who had alighted from that vehicle have opened fire continuously at the two persons seated in the front seat and subsequently had fled in the motor vehicle in which they had come, it was revealed at investigations. This information was provided by the lady who had saved her life. The motor car is supposed to have been driven by the person called Madi.

A  senior police officer said that information is received that a gang leader by the name of 'Pukudu Kanna' 's accomplices had come to open fire this way and investigations are underway to confirm the said information. It is understood that police have received information that this person called 'Pukudu Kanna' is being searched for by police to be arrested and he had fled to India some years back and is in hiding. Police have further received information that he is directing underground activities from India. Police also said that they are conducting inquiries to check whether the shooting incident is recorded in CCTV cameras fixed in the vicinity.

Police say that Rajendran who has been shot dead is the brother of the wife of a son of the woman named 'Kudu Selvi'. 'Kudu Selvi' was shot down in 2015 by a rival underground gang while 'Pukudu Kanna's father has died last year from gun shot injuries, police say. According to what police say, because of difference in opinion between 'Kudu Selvi's faction and 'Kudu Kanna's faction about five people have died from time to time. Police believe that the clash of opinion itself may have contributed in he and his assistant being murdered this way.

Rajendran and his assistant have died on the spot from the gunfire and several wounds are observed all over their bodies and all over the vehicle too, police say. Police have recovered several blank T 56 bullets fallen around the area where the shooting took place.
