4 year old too falls in trying to give helping hand to 14 year old brother who emerges from water during heavy showers -- both finally die as a result!

A most unfortunate tragedy is reported from Kurunegala where a 14 year old boy had fallen down a drain which was dug by the side of the road at the time when two children had been playing during this inclement weather prevalent these days and the 4 year old child who stretched his arm to the other boy he also has fallen and both died as a result.

The autopsy was held at Kurunegala Teaching Hospital and as revealed, the dead 4 year old child's father said: "Kavishan who has died is my son. The other child, Lahiru Navin who has died younger sister's son. By was of relationship he happens to be a brother of mine. I went for duty as a watcher to
an estate of 20 acres in Katupitiya, Pothuhera with my wife and child on 5th morning. My son, the deceased came with me to stay at the coconut plantation called Katupitiyawatta. He came with us to to go to his cousin brother's land. A short while after we entered the guardroom, it began to rain. When the rain started pouring around 3 in the afternoon I went to the yard to fetch coconuts. My son and the cousin brother came behind me. They were playing in the waters flowing down the road leading to the land. I saw the cousin falling into the pit. I was about 50 metres away from where they were. I saw my son who stretched his arm to the cousin brother who submerged in the waters and then emerged ... too falling. Though I got down and searched my child and the other child, I could not find them at that time. Finally it was only after after a search of about 20 minutes with those around that we managed to find them. We took both of them to the provincial hospital at Mathawa, Thalampitiya, the doctor there pronounced them dead.

It was the two boys called P.J. Lasindu Navin Witharana (14) studying in Maspotha Maha Vidyalaya, 9th year, living in Wariyapola, Yatiyanadura, Nawagaththa and H.D. Kavishan Lakshan Pushpakumara (4) living in Polpithigama, Maeliya who had died in this manner. By relationship they were father's brother and relative son. Coroner Mr. Dharmakirthi Amarasingha gave the verdict on the two dead children as having died by being drowned.
